Applicability of the Non-linear Wall Models
The Eurocode8 allows the extension of linear into nonlinear analysis in order to design new buildings and evaluate strength of the existing ones. There are various mathematical models available for analysis of the wall nonlinear response during earthquake excitation. They could be divided in two main groups: microelement (local- FEM, fiber, etc.) and macro element (global- beam-column, MVLEM, etc.) models. While micro models appear to be useful for analysis of the local behavior, macro models give a good idea of expected lateral drifts during inelastic response. This paper compares the results obtained by various numerical models to the experimental data. The applicability of wall models: microelement model used in ZeusNL (Elnashai, 2004.), multiple-vertical-lineelement with- and without shear spring used in Ruaumoko (Athol, 2003.) and one component beam-column (wall) element used in LarzWD (Lopez, 1988.) and its modification in (Sigmund, 2000.) have been verified by comparing the calculated results with the experimental results obtained during the two European large-scale shake table tests. The nonlinear dynamic responses of the four numerical wall models made for the two model structures were analyzed in terms of response waveforms, maximum displacements and base shears, inter-story drifts and stiffness degradation.
