Faunal characteristics and distribution of Trichoptera (Insecta) at the Cetina river
The Mediterranean area of Croatia is characterised by a large number of running waters. The most important are Krka, Zrmanja and Cetina with their smaller tributaries. The fauna of Trichoptera (caddisflies) in this karst area, which covers about 50% of the entire territory of Croatia, is almost completely unknown. In 2004 and 2005, at the river Cetina, the longest Croatian Mediterranean river, Trichoptera were collected on 12 sites. Collection was performed on a monthly basis, including the winter months, and covered all types of habitats (springs, upper, middle and lower reach of the river and hydropower plant accumulations). During the 15 on-site visits, about 12, 000 imagos were collected and more than 50 species of Trichoptera recorded. The composition and structure of trichopteran fauna from all sites were analysed (diversity, similarity). Moreover, seasonal dynamics and distribution were determined for each species. Regarding faunistics, the most interesting species recorded were Rhyacophila balcanica Rad., Annitela aphelbecki Klap., Tinodes braueri McL., Ceraclea alboguttata Hagen, Atripsodes dalamtinus Mal., some of them recorded in Croatian fauna for the first time.
