Effects of live yeast cells on production results of Croatian crossbred dairy sheep (preliminary results)
A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of live yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), on milk production and composition in middle and late lactation. The experiment was conducted on forty Croatian crossbred dairy sheep divided into control group without live yeast cells (CD = control diet) and experimental group with live yeast cells in diet (YC = diet with Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Diet was based on pasture and supplement containing corn (66, 3% ), soybean meal (18, 7%), bran (6%) and alfalfa meal (4%). Total amount of milk was higher in experimental group at 21st day (p < 0, 1). Milk yield in the morning was also higher in experimental group with statistical significance only at 21.st day (p < 0, 05). No effects were detected in the evening milk yield. Milk composition was not affected by treatments. We concluded that live yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) did not improved average milk yield (602, 9 and 630, 28, for control and yeast live cells treatment, respectively) in dairy sheep fed pasture and supplement.
