Public Libraries Potential Possibilities in Work with Children
The paper relies on two very important findings of a survey among the parents of pre-school children in kindergartens of Osijek-Baranya county. The survey was part of a research project « Research of reading habits and information needs of children and young adults» . The first finding is that it is mothers who mostly support and nurture the reading habits of children, and the second one is that parents who put children in kindergartens are mostly unaware of the children-aimed activities of public libraries in the area. This paper is based on a pilot-study carried out in public libraries from Osijek-Baranya county in Croatia. The paper offers and analizes following hypotheses: marketing of library activities has a significant impact on children's participation in library workshops ; parents or caretakers have a significant impact on children's visit to libraries ; taking part in library workshops can significantly influence parents or caretakers to read children at home as well, library can help parents or caretakers in their choice of appropriate reading material for the youngest children. The aim of the paper is to test the instruments and methodology for later more significant research that will be part of the project « Research of reading habits and information needs of children and young adults» .
