Measuring and Modelling Overhead Transmition Line Conductor Vibrations
Aeolian vibrations of overhead transmittion line conductors and wires (wind induced vibrations due to the shedding of Karman vortices) are usually recorded at frequencies of 5-50 Hz. They are the main source of damage to conductors and wires due to material fatigue, and can thus significantly shorten their life-span. This paper gives a short description of the procedure of measuring aeolian vibrations of conductors by using the measuring device VIBRECTM 400, as well as the Energy Balance Method, which is the basis for the computer program for the estimation of aeolian vibrations, developped in the corporation Dalekovod, inc. Also given is the comparison between the data generated by the developped computer program and data gathered through field measurements using device VIBRECTM 400. After the application of the dampers, dynamic stress was greatly reduced, and the estimated life span is more than 500 years. A very high correlation between the measured data and the developped computer program (EBM) generated data has been accomplished.
