Mechanical and thermal properties of polypropylene/talc and polystyrene/talc composites
The interphase between polymer matrix and filler particles has the critical influence on the composite properties. In this study mechanical and thermal properties of composites based on polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) matrices filled with talc filler were investigated. Adhesion parameters in composites ; thermodynamic reversible work of adhesion, coefficient of wetting and interfacial free energy were calculated in order to evaluate the differences in polypropylene and polystyrene composites with talc filler. The results were shown differences in PP/talc and PS/talc composite structure. The addition of talc filler in polypropylene matrix indicated that the talc particles are very effective nucleating agent for PP what results in higher stiffness of the composite systems. In PS/talc composites a reinforcement of PS matrix with talc filler was observed. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mechanical measurements confirmed significant differences in composite structure and presence of stronger interactions at polymer/filler interface in PS/talc composites. Obtained results are in a good correlation with calculated adhesion parameters.
