Anthropologic head parameters of Croatian and Syrian population
Anthropometric studies of craniofacial morphologic characteristics between members of different races, but also within the same races or ethnic groups, are still actual. They have important role in the anthropology and in other branches of science. The growth and development of these structures occur under the influence of internal (genetic) and external factors (climate, air pollution, economic conditions, prolonged period)and longterm evolutionary changes. We found no data in the available literature that would provide any information on the craniofacial characteristics of the Syrian polulation. Thus, the aim of this study was to find out if there were any differences in the basic haed shapes between the Croatian and Syrian population and indentify these differences based on the anthropologic head parameters and head index. The total sample consisted of 400 subjects of both sex divided into two groups, i.e. the Croatian and the Syrian one with 200 subjects each. The subjects were 18-24 years old. All measurements were performed on samples in Zagreb, Damascuc and Aleppo. Head length (G-Op) and head width (Eu-Eu) were measured and head index (HI) was obtained by calculation. All measurement results were statistically processed for each variable. All variables were included in testing the differences in arithmetic means between the Croatian and Syrian samples by Student t-test at the level of significance p<0.05. Results of our study demonstrated that head length (G-Op) was significantly higher in the Croatian populatin sample (p<0.001). Head width (Eu-Eu)was significantly higher in the Syrian population sample (p<0.0001). Head index (HI) was significantly higher in the Syrian population sample (P<0.001). Based on the results of our study we concluded that the Croats have longer and narrower heads than Syrians. According to the head index which is significantly lower in Croats, dolichocephalic head type predominates in Croatian subjects while brachycephalic head type is prevalent among Syrian subjects.
