Numerical analysis of stress states at excavation of parallel tunnel tubes

Numerous tunnels have been built at the Rijeka-Zagreb-Split half motorway connecting the Croatian mainland with the coastal area. Since the traffic volume is high, it has been planned to expand this road cross-section and upgrade it to a full motorway with two lanes for each traffic direction. Consequently, the second tunnel tube will have to be built adjacent to the existing tunnels. The paper will describe stress and strain analysis for parallel tunnel openings that are to meet optimum rock mass stress and safety of constructed tunnels. Theoretical analyses are valuable methods of evaluation.
