Renewable Energy Sources in the Regions Embracing Corridor Vc
Slavonia is economically the least developed region in Croatia (a mere 1/3 of EU average). This unfavorable condition comes as a result of destruction during the war (1991-1996), as well as the trends of weak development and agricultural orientation. To achieve a stronger economic development it is necessary to ensure efficient usage of energy in the aspect of energetic, ecological and economically complex processes. At the same time, Croatian energetics faces several significant challenges: (a) consumer supply safety, (b) extreme growth of prices of oil and other fossil fuels, (c) adoption and implementation of Kyoto protocol I (d) restructuring and privatization of major government-owned energy companies. In the aspect of European integrations there are various prerequisites for accelerated growth in usage of renewable energy sources. This energetic-economic paradigm includes a basis for new technological and economic development cycle in the region of Slavonia. Due to that, the usage of renewable energy sources is highly significant. The state of energetics and questions of energy supply, as well as environment protection, is similar within all of the regions embracing Corridor Vc. The economical structure of these (C-5c) regions (with emphasis on agro-complex), their efficiency and techno-economical unknowns of using renewable energy sources also impose similar or practically the same development questions. Their resolution (on national, regional or local level) will become far more effective if one would draft and carry out exchange of research results and experiences in development and/or transfer of technologies for usage of biomasses, geothermal energy, wind energy, small waterways and solar power. This cooperation can be supplemented with cooperation in the field of installing pilot facilities and/or production of individual devices/machines which would use renewable energy sources. The foundation of constant internet communication (websites) and annual scientific-expert colloquium on renewable energy sources in Corridor Vc regions would be noted as a good start for realizing cooperation and development of economically relevant usage of renewable energy sources.
