Looking at eyes and faces : Opthalmologic water-colours drawn largely by physician-artists Vienna late 18th and 19th centuries

Our intention was, to present hand made illustrations from up to 200 years ago and have various medical specialists, ophthalmologists in the first place, give their immediate impressions. We want to emphasize how the eye, the hand, and the brain of a talented physician can prove dexterity and talent in several fields. G J Beer is a master example because he was an eminent eye surgeon, clinician, and painter. The portfolio of eye diseases in this book covers problems ranging from malignant melanoma to tapeworm infection, cataracts to uveitis, and hemangiomas to keratoconus. Each is richly enhanced by a clinical description and detailed differential diagnosis provided by a current authority. Stripped of their modern MRIs, CT scans, and angiograms, these consultants project themselves back in time to see these patients. Many were seen before Helmholtz’ s invention of the ophthalmoscope in 1851, or von Graefe’ s operation for strabismus in 1857. The consultations help make the illustrations more intriguing, and the reader a better diagnostician.
