IR and X-ray Possibilities in Conservation of Works of Art
Non-destructive methods are of the most essential interest in determination of state of works of art (pictures sculptures, architecture). It is a big advantage in nondestructive determination of quantity and shape of some buried layer (metql for instance), from some certain historical period, because it helps in decision about the most appropriate methods of restoration, conservation and eventual presentation. In collaboration with Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecturem it was used IC-thermography and X-ray methods to get the first insight in determination of thin metal layers (gold, silver, cooper etc.) under paint layers of different thickness. This paper presents some of the first investigations in buried metal layers in Laboratory for conservation research on the original works of art.
