ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION – EDUCATION FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
Environmental education is a process that provides individuals with a heightened awareness of the environment in which they live. While it provides them with requisite knowledge, skills, values, and the experiences of others, it also fosters commitment that enables individual, as well as joint, action to be taken in addressing the many environmental issues of today and the future. This is a complex process that does not merely cover events, but focuses on the approach of building society as a whole. The authors analyse environmental education in Croatia, and in particular, in Istria, the country’ s most developed tourist region. Based on conducted surveys, a comparison is provided of the environmental awareness and ecology-minded behaviour of surveyed residents of Istria and that of tourists vacationing in Istria. Suggestions are presented for the introduction of environmental education in the schooling system from pre-school to university levels.
