Human brucellosis in Croatia
We report the human brucellosis occurred in 2004 in a rural area of southern Croatia near the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH), a country with recognized natural foci of brucellosis. Brucellosis has been a notifiable disease in Croatia since 1960. No documented case of human brucellosis had previously been reported in southern Croatia. In the area, where brucellosis occurred in 2004, goats and sheep breeding is an important economic activity. No cases of human brucellosis have occurred since August 2004 in the region. Attention should be given to this zoonosis in order to avoid future sporadic or epidemic occurrence of human disease, particularly because in the vicinity of BH, a country endemic for brucellosis. Clinicians should consider the diagnosis of brucellosis among febrile patients who had direct contact with livestock before onset of fever. The emergence of brucellosis in southern Croatia in 2004, and the speed with which it was characterized and contained, emphasize the importance of cooperation between physicians and veterinarians because prevention of brucellosis in humans is dependent on the control and eradication of the disease in livestock.
