Operating Criteria for Design of Power Management Systems on Ships
A probability based method for estimation of electrical power variations on ships due to varying weather conditions is proposed. The main causes for severe power fluctuations on the generators are assumed to be due to weather disturbances acting on the electrically driven thrusters. In that respect, the most important effects on the propeller torque/power dynamics have been analysed: ventilation, in-and-out-of-water effects and varying inflow velocity. The method can be used to optimize the power management/power plant design with regards to system configuration, equipment selection, redundancy, failure modes, and to define possible control concepts.
