Pedestrians and Roundabout Capacity - A Simulation Analysis
Single-lane roundabouts may face cyclical problems of overcrowding at both the entrances and exists of its circulatory carriageway due to a strong stream of pedestrians (and/or cyclists). Since vehicles at the ro¬ ; undabout entries and exists have to provide the right of way to pede¬ ; strians, this disturbance occurs. If a stream of vehicles is directed to the entry, the roundabout will not necessarily reach its minimum capacity. If a stream of vehicles is directed to the exit, the maximum capacity will be exceeded. A lot of countries have developed their own capacity methodologies for the analysis of intersection capacity and performance -measures of their effectiveness. Common characteristics of these methodologies in¬ ; clude a lot of mathematical determinations and suppositions. Today, there is a growing interest in simulation methods. In the article, the possibility of simulation methods dealing with pro¬ ; blems of the influence of a strong stream on the capacity of roundabouts is presented. In th, e case study, the Vissim program was used on a concrete rounda-boul, aha the results show a very valid model for real circumstances.
