Design of Socks in the Past and Present
The machine production of socks has begun in the year 1589 when William Lee has produced the first knitting machine. Shortly has started the production of silk, cotton and wool knitted shaped fabrics for socks. In this paper, the historical overview of hosiery trends and production up to sophisticated CAD systems is given. The principle of recent sock engineering design is described using the sock machine Goal produced by Lonati as the example. The machine count is E9 and it has 108 needles. Besides the main yarn, the machine uses 12 more yarns in different color what enables the production of the variety of jacquard patterns. The machine operates with support of CAD system Graphitron 6. The mentioned systems were used to produce the socks that illustrate the possibilities of machine sampling.
