A Journey through Transition Time - With Special Reference to Croatia

The economic performance of some twenty East European transition countries, including the European part of the former USSR, has meandered in many different directions and is swamped by so many confusing facts that ample opportunities exist for opposite views, some praising and some denigrating the transition and its results. Sometimes, the prolonged and pesristent disputes and high social costs even call into question the very need for transition. When this extreme position has been reached, it is time for a retrospective approach to put pre-transition and transition experience in a comparative and unbiased historical perspective. Because lessons from history not learnt have the embarrassing habit of repeating themselves.
