Synthesis and Characterization of Nanocrystalline Chromium and Iron Doped Titania
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has received significant attention due to the broad applications into mainly optical, photovoltaic, and electrochromic devices as well as for reversible cathode materials in rechargeable batteries [1]. Moreover, upon doping with transition metal (e.g. Cr, Fe, V, Co and Ni), the ferromagnetic ordering can be introduced into titania host [2]. By applying nonaqueous sol-gel route, we synthesized 3% chromium and 3% iron doped titania. The Rietveld refinement of XRD powder patterns, combined high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis were employed for structural characterization of as-synthesized doped titania samples. The preliminary structural investigations have revealed that Cr-doped titania is amorphous, while Fe-doped titania is nanocrystalline with volume-weighted average grain size of 4 nm. TEM measurement has shown that the particles are very uniform in size and shape, mostly they are spherical. EDX analysis has confirmed the presence of Cr and Fe into titania matrix on the local scale. HRTEM measurement has revealed structural imperfections of investigated material, which is correlated with the high value of microstrain (0.8%) calculated from the line-broadening analysis of XRD pattern.
