Gangliosides in brain ischemias
The aim of this biochemical study was to explore the changes of gangliosides in brain tissue affected by ischemic damage. Samples of brain tissue with ischemic lesion (grey and white matter) (n=5), tissue adjacent to lesion (grey and white matter)(n=3) and contralateral control tissue (grey and white matter)(n=5) were analyzed. Results showed a significant decrease in the total amount of gangliosides in the samples with ischemic lesion as compared to control samples. Percentage distribution of individual gangliosides in lesion samples in comparison to control samples showed a decrease in gangliosides characteristic of neuronal cells (GD1a, GD1b, GT1b) due to ischemic destruction of neurons, and an increase in GM3 and GD3 gangliosides characteristic of glial cells but also of the lysosomal ganglioside catabolism.
