Surface modification of an inconel-600 electrode
This paper shows experimental conditions for a hydrous oxide growth on Inconel-600, and to what extent such modified layer contributes to passivity of the oxide film. In a typical experiment, the oxide, grown for example by 30 repetitive cycles, exhibited enhanced stability, which was evidenced by about one order of magnitude lower currents in both the active and passive ranges of anodic polarization curve. The open circuit potential was abozt 400 mV more positive in the case of the grown oxide film. The dissolution of nickel and iron species was detected using RRDE, and confirmed by cyclic voltammogram whicg exhibited a much better pronounced chromium wave. The model which we propose is that after dissolution of nickel and iron, chromium oxide species remain in the hydrous mattrix and protect the layer from corrosive attack.
