Antimicrobial Funcionalisation of Knitted Fabrics

Protection of the environment and human health is now perceived as much more important than the business profitability. Antimicrobial finishing is used on textile fabrics to control bacteria, fungi, mold, mildew and algae present in everyday life, to resolve problems of deterioration, staining, odors and health concerns they cause. It has been long ago recognized that microorganisms, particularly bacteria, can have a negative influence on textile fabrics, especially cotton ones. Most weaved or knitted fabrics used as cloths, underwear and bedclothes in hospitals and hotels are conductive to cross infection or transmission of diseases caused by microorganisms. For protection and hygienic reasons knitted fabrics were treated with three different groups of antimicrobial agents. Their bacteriostatic activity was determined using standard methods JIS L 1902:2002 and AATCC 147:1998 before and after the washing process. The antimicrobial activities of the finished cotton knitted fabrics were tested against gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli) bacteria. Two different commercial products were used: AMA 1 as quaternary ammonium agent and AMA 2 as triclosan agent. Citric acid is applied as AM 3 to investigate its potential antimicrobial effectiveness.
