Negative Impact Of Monitoring The European Cherry Fruit Fly On Beneficial Entomofauna In Croatia
The European cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi Loew ia a key pest in cherry production. Pest control against the cherry maggot in commercial orchards is difficult because of cherry fruits short ripening time and long life of insecticides. Yellow sticky traps with bait (ammonium salt) are common in monitoring the European cherry fruit fly. Yellow colour attracts many fruit pests from the Diptera order as well as Rhagoletis cerasi, Bactrocera oleae etc. In the plant protection against the cherry maggot, a number of caught flies onsticky traps give us an estimate about pest population and this data are useful in fruit damage forecast. Visual traps are not salective as sexual traps using pheromone in monitoring many pests. Monitoring the European cherry fruit fly was carried out at an experimental orchard in Zagreb for several years. In addition to many Diptera species, the yellow colour attracted many beneficial insects that got caught on sticky traps. Our experience showed attractiveness of yellow colour for beneficial species from the following families: Coccinellidae, Rhaphidiidae, Hemerobiidae, Chrisopidae, Panorpidae, Anthocoridae and some parasitoids from the Hymenoptera order. Biotechnical plant protection measures against the cherry maggot that are recommended as ecologically safe are not completely beneficial due to negative impact on beneficial insect fauna. Yellow sticky traps are often used in cherry fruits protection for cherry maggot mass-trapping in backyards. However, this non-pesticide plant protection measure has negative impact on beneficial insect population. The result of our investigation include a list of beneficial insects and their families that were caught on yellow sticky traps in the course of monitoring the European cherry fruit fly in Croatian cherry orchards.
