Movement and Body Symbolization in Therapy and Rehabilitation

Based on our knowledge from anthropology, kinesiology, pedagogic and other disciplines, we discover the possibility of application and analysis of movement in diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation procedures. The symbolism of movement is also discovered in various fields of art, e. g. in fine arts, music, dance… In contemporary clinical and other researches, various aspects of dance (ballet art, dance pedagogy) are used, and there is also the complementary application of contents from fine arts and music art in the conception of themes for the application of body symbolization. Body symbolization represents a form of symbolic transfer of a message through body movements in therapeutic communication. This paper presents excerpts from the studies realized within the project “ Supportive Therapies and Development of Life Potential” , supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia. Presented are some aspects of clinical application of body symbolization in complementary supportive therapy of a female patient in whom psychosomatic disorders (depression, neurotic disorders) have been registered due to her sister’ s illness, osteosarcoma. For the purpose of clinical assessment, the results obtained on SCL-90 (Symptom Check List – 90 – Self Report Symptom Inventory) have been used, modified by visual-analogue scales of assessment for the variables good, bad and aesthetic dimension of existential experience, as well as with the application of Maladaptive Behavior Dance / Movement Therapy Evaluation Form. Based on the results obtained, we have interpreted the significance of movement and body symbolization within creative therapy, an integrative somatotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic approach. Reference has also been made to the possibility of application of this approach in other fields of therapy and rehabilitation as well.
