Current status and perspectives of young scientists in Europe: PhD candidates' survey
Regarding overall situation, there are about 500, 000 young researchers in Europe who are trained towards the next step of their career. Due to a lack of regulation in the PhD programmes, the level of professional and social rights of PhD candidates varies from country to country and, even to a higher extent, from supervisor to supervisor. Related to PhD candidates’ status improvement, Europe has to undergo a set of reforms related to, among others, Bologna declaration, Lisbon strategy and the European Charter for Researchers and a Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. EURODOC (the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Young Researchers) is planning a survey on PhD candidates’ status and perspectives, aiming at generating and presenting internationally comparable data on the professional, social and economic aspects of the PhD candidates’ status. This paper will present survey background, brief content, methodology, report structure and EURODOC partners who will work together in order to give insights which will help to improve researchers’ status and enhance attractiveness of researchers’ careers, thus, to improve meeting Lisbon agenda goals.
