Deposition of sol-gel ZrO_2 layers on Al_2O_3 coating

The paper describes a method of coating which combines two different methods of producing the layers. The first layer is Al2O3 produced by plasma spraying with thickness of 350 micrometer which was deposited on the stainless steel (X22CrMoV121) substrate. After that, ZrO_2 layer was deposited on the Al2O3 coating by a sol-gel process using dip coating technique. The dip coating process was performed four or eight times in order to produce a thicker layer. In experimental work, coating produced by this method was tested on micro-scale abrasion tester and ball on disc tester. Results shows that sol-gel ZrO_2 layers decrease wear factor tested by micro-scale abrasion tester and decrease coefficient of friction and wear factor by ball on disc tester.
