Incidence of primary tumours of the central nervous system in the Rijeka region in Croatia

We investigated the incidence of primary tumours of the central nervous system (CNS) in Rijeka Region (Croatia) in the 1990-99 period. The primary tumours of the CNS were grouped according to classification of the World Health Organization. The percentage distribution of different types of tumours regarding their sites, development and histopatological findings, as well as their distribution through age and sex specific incidence were analysed. Four hundred and thirty patients (203 males and 227 females) aut of total population of 277 455 were studied. Eighty six percent of the tumours were pathohistologically confirmed and 14% were confired clinically (CT and MRI). Total annual incidence for all the CNS primary tumours was 12.6/100 000 year (7.9 for males, 8.1 for females). The highest incidence was reported in the age group between 60 and 74 (34.6/100 000/year for males, 30.8/100 000/year for females). The most frequent sites of tumours in children were ventricular and infratentorial areas, while in adults they were supratentorial ones. Pathohistologically the most frequent tumours belonged to neuroepithelial tissue (40%) out of which 35.5% were astrocitic. The results of the research can be used as basis for future research in the environmental factors of the pathogenesis of these tumours.
