Public and private space in a Medieval Dalmatian town
The paper deals with the appearance and the evolution of the concept of public space in a medieval Dalmatian town. Its introductory chapters contain a brief historical outline of urban development in Dalmatia. The differences between the towns that existed in the Roman antiquity (Zadar, Trogir, Split) and the ones which are medieval in origin (Dubrovnik, Šibenik) are emphasized. The notions of private (i. e. non-public) and public space are observed starting from the architectural forms of the urban dwelling (and its relations with the surrounding spaces) and the written sources, above all the contemporary municipal legislation.
