Analysis of an X-ray Detectable Yarn Woven into Fabric

Woven fabric is a textile surface material which is present in almost every life segment. One of the major segments is medicine, where the fabric plays an important role. The subject of this paper is to analyze the fabric, which is an extremely important component of medical surgical equipment. It concerns a fabric-gauze which is interwoven with the yarn detectable by X-rays. This kind of fabric is extraordinary significant for safety and prevention from possible complication which can occur after the operation, during which the piece of gauze could be left in the organism. In this case such gauze, i.e. yarn, becomes easily visible in the course of an X-ray investigation whereby it is made possible to locate and remove it. As tensile strength, softness and elongation of this kind of yarn is of paramount importance, artificial fibers of synthetic polymers are used. In this case, it is a polypropylen fiber, which is melt spun with a high loading of barium sulphate (BaSO4). It has the shape of a filament, and by their joining into a multi-filament polypropylene yarn warpped with the fine polyester thread all crucial characteristics are obtained that has been mentioned before. Such yarn has specific properties requiring a specific raw material and manufacturing procedure. For this reason this yarn belongs to a new generation of yarns which are based on edvanced technologies at the end of the 20th century. It counts to "smart" yarns, i.e. to "smart" fibres which are sensitive to electromagnetic or more exactly to X-ray radiation.
