The Influence of Yarn Linear Density on UV Protection of Woven Cotton Fabrics

Diminishing of the ozone layer results with the reaching of UV radiation (UV-R) on the Earth's surface. This radiation, divided into UV-A, UV-B and UV-C is the main reason for increasing the skin cancer rates. The UV-C radiation get absorbed by atmosphere, but UV-B and UV-A rays reach the Earth and cause known skin aging and recently the formation of skin malignant neoplasm. It is well known that textile fabrics provide some protection against damaging by ultraviolet radiation. This protection highly depends on fabric construction, especially for longer pending in the sun. Fabric count or porosity, as well as type of weaving, are the key parameters influencing ultraviolet transmission. This paper deals with the influence of yarn linear density of cotton fabric on its ultraviolet skin protection expressed as ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). The effects of yarn linear density, fabric count and cover factor on UPF using plain-woven fabrics from the same cotton fibers were discussed. Raw and pretreated cotton fabrics were used. Yarn thickness needed for determination of cover factor was measured by photoelectric method. UV-A and UV-B transmissions were measured on transmission spectrophotometer Cary 50 Solarscreen (Varian) according to AATCC Test Method 183-2000. On the base of these values Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) was calculated.
