An Investigation of Aalkaline Hydrolisis Treatments of Polyester Fabric Using SEM, IR Spectroscopy and TGA

Alkaline hydrolyses of polyester fabric causes modification to the surface of the hydrophobic fibres from which the fabric is woven, which can improve comfort and other fabric properties. Samples of the fabric were chemically prepared in three different ways including an untreated control fabric sample. The effects of the chemical treatment were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Contact Angle (DCA) in water. The results of these techniques where compared to the results obtained from a previously published study on the same fabrics and treatments which were assessed for weight loss, pore size, zeta potential, isoelectric point (IEP) and contact angle in water by the drop method. SEM revealed a pitting effect on the alkaline treated fabrics, which did not occur on the fibres from the untreated fabric. IR spectroscopy was shown to be able to partially separate out the different treatments with the application of principal component analysis. However no clear differences were observed visually between the spectra from the different fabric samples. Measured TGA parameters were observed to correlate well with weight loss and effective pore radius and to a lesser degree with zeta potential and IEP. DCA correlated with TGA results ; however the contact angle by liquid drop method gave poor correlation response with thermal data but correlated well with zeta potential.
