Homogeneity and inhomogeneity impact on ageing and properties of natural stone
Homogeneity and inhomogeneity could be observed and explored in correlation with numerous stone properties, for example colour, density, apparent density, porosity, water absorption at atmospheric pressure, drying and wetting (softening and pore pressure), water absorption coefficient by capillarity, compressive strength, flexural strength, shear and tensile strength, resistance to salt crystallisation and pressure, resistance to ageing by salt mist, resistance to ageing by SO2 action in the presence of humidity, salts from cement, resistance to ageing by thermal shock, thermal dilatation and thermal dilatation coefficient, sound speed propagation, petrographic properties, structure and texture (fabric), frost resistance and others. Examples related to the above will be presented in the paper.
Natural stone; natural stone ageing; homogeneity; inhomogeneity (heterogeneity)
