Space weather
Space weather refers to the phenomena taking place in the Sun-Earth environment. It is connected with the violent transfers of matter (electrons, protons and ions of various atoms) and electromagnetic radiation ( a blackbody radiation at a temperature of about 5700 K) from the Sun to the Earth. In this short presentation, we shell discuss origin and structure of the solar spectrum as well as the variation in the UV spectrum and UV index due to various solar activities (sunspot cycle, solar wind, ...). Changes in the Sun's UV radiation affect the ozone protective layer and the energy input into the upper atmosphere. We discuss formation and depletion of the ozone layer due to greenhouse gases and the signs of the connection between space weather and the long-term climate-weather changes. As the ozone layer becomes thinner, the protective filter provided by the atmosphere is progressively reduced. Consequently, human beings and the environment are exposed to higher UV radiation levels, and especially higher UVB levels that have the greatest impact on human health, animals, marine organisms and plant life. Depletion of the ozone layer is likely to aggravate existing health effects caused by exposure to UV radiation.
