The Road to Measurements and Discoveries at the LHC
The LHC collider at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, is designed to produce proton proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV, the highest energy ever reached in such collisions. The measurement of these collisions should help answering some of the most burning open questions in particle physics today. At the top of the list is the quest for the origin of mass, possibly explained by the existence of the Higgs boson. The LHC experiments should give a definitive answer to the question of the Higgs boson existence. They should also provide the oportunity to search for new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics, necessary to answer many open questions and resolve unsatisfactory features of the Standard Model. The construction status of the LHC collider and of the CMS experiment are presented, as well as an overview of the physics program that will be covered by the CMS experiment.
