Inhibition of leucocyte migration by grass pollen antigens in patients with pollen allergy
A micromethod for peripheral leucocyte migration was used to examine normal persons and patients with summer hay-fever for evidence of cell-mediated immunity to a mixture of grass pollen allergens. The migration of leucocytes from hay-fever subjects was inhibited when a concentration of 100 or 1, 000 Noon units per ml was added to the chambers. There was no inhibition if the concentration lower than 10 Noon units per ml was used in these subjects, nor was it observed in the presence of any concentration of antigen with leucocytes of normal persons treated under the same conditions. Thi inhibition was best expressed 2 hours after setting up the chambers, but at 24 hours it was still significant if the concentration of 1, 000 Noon units of pollen allergens per ml was used. Migration inhibition was more pronounced in patients treated by hyposensitisation than in the untreated ones. these findings indicate that in patients with hay-fever leucocyte migration is inhibited by pollen antigens ; this inhibition is related to the concentration of antigen and is intensified in patients treated by hyposensitisation.
