Dual-laser ablation and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy at atmospheric air

We performed laser induced breakdown spectroscopy study of various metal and non-metal targets at atmospheric air using single-laser and dual-laser ablation with aim to explore possibilities of the method for elemental analyses and production and deposition of various new materials. For ablation, in the parallel laser beam configuration, two ns Q-switched Nd-YAG lasers (Brilliant 350 mJ at 1064 nm and Brio 100 mJ at 1064 nm) were used. Targets were mounted on an X-Y translation stage to allow precise positioning and were also rotated to avoid drilling. Both target and the focusing lens could be moved by stepping motors. Lasers, digital delay generator, and step motors were controlled by a PC computer using a homemade LabVIEW program. For emission detection LIBS2000+ spectrometer which allows real-time spectral observation in the range 200 nm to 960 nm with spectral resolution of 0.1 nm was used. As targets we used titanium, magnesium, zinc, graphite, and SiC and graphite-polymer composites. Preliminary results show tenfold emission increase for the case of dual-laser ablation compared to single laser absorptions for most of targets. In the case of graphite-polymer composite significant emission increase from C2 radical, important precursor for growth of carbon nanoparticles, was observed.
