Population of the island of Vis: Linkages of nutritional habits to morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics

The Island of Vis is one of the middle Dalmatian islands with pure Mediterranean climate. There are two smaller towns on the opposite sides of the island ; Vis and Komiža, as well as several smaller inland villages . Research was done between 2001 and 2003, with the total of 307 subjects, 44% of male and 56% of female. Research is oriented on the analysis of nutritional habits linked with biological characteristics (morphology, physiology, biochemistry) and complex diseases. Anthropometric measures show us that the height is different in towns as well as between sex. Average height of males in town of Vis is 173, 68 cm and 160, 51 cm for females. In Komiža average height of males is 176, 25 cm, and 162, 3 cm for females. Statistical analysis of weight shows differences between males and females with male average 84, 37 kg and female average of 74, 1 kg. Average of BMI for whole population on the island is 27.47. Results from the nutritional poll shows us expected information about island nutrition. This includes the high input of red vine, olive oil, fresh see fishes as well as local vegetables and fruits. Biochemical examinations of keratin, urate, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and glucoses where within normal values and no statistically significant differences between populations was observed. Average value of blood pressure in whole population is for systolic 149.19 mmHg and diastolic 91, 02 mmHg. Share of complex diseases in whole population are ; higher blood pressure 32, 2%, hearth disease 9, 4%, stroke 3, 9%, manic depression 3, 6%, diabetes 8, 1%, cancer 6%, gout 4, 2%, furuncle 16, 9% and kidney disease 9, 4%. Significant differences between the populations where noticed in hearth disease, with Komiža 82, 8% and 17, 2% in Vis.
