Dating of the Old Bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The famous single-arch stone bridge over the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was built in 1557-1566 by the order of Turkish sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. During the reconstruction of the Old Bridge, which was destroyed in war 1993, the remnants of two older wooden bridges were found on the same location. Six wood and two charcoal samples were dated by the 14C method, and 5 wood samples with visible tree rings were given for dendrochronological dating. Results of dating gave several periods of construction and reconstruction of the bridge and neighboring towers, starting from the 11th century up to the construction of the Turkish bridge. Good agreement between the calibrated 14C and dendrochronological ages is obtained.
