Proton elastic scattering from aluminum for 120^o, 150^o and 165^o in the energy interval from 2.5 to 5 MeV
The differential cross sections for scattering of H ions from aluminum were m, easured at scattering angles of 120^o, 150^o and 165^o in the energy range from 2.5 to 5 MeV. The non-Rutherford cross sections of H from Al have been reported in the literature only for energies up to 3 MeV. From these data it can be seen that elastic scattering excitation function shows very complex resonance structure. Therefore the aim of this work has been investigation of cross section behavior at higher energies. This may improve reliability of backscattering analysis for this energy region and samples where knowledge of non-Rutherford cross sections for protons on aluminum have to be known. Thin AlN film (~150nm) evaporated on vitreous graphite substrate and additional 6 nm Au film on the top of it was used as the target for the measurements presented here. The number of impinging projectiles on the target was determined from the number of H ions scattered by the Au layer assuming that cross sections for backscattering of protons from gold have Rutherford value in the entire energy region. We report that at energies above 3 MeV, excitation function shows similar complex resonance structure with significant deviation from the Rutherford value for all investigated energies and scattering angles.
