Peptidoglycan monomer and its synthetic derivatives as substrates for N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanine amidase
N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanine amidase from human serum hydrolyses peptidoglycan monomer (PGM) cleaving the lactylamide bond between lactic acid and L-alanine. The products of hydrolysis are the disaccharide GlcNAc-MurNAc and the pentapeptid, L-Ala-D-isoGln-mesoDAP-D-Ala-D-Ala. Boc-Tyr-PGM and adamantylacetyl-PGM are also good substrates for the amidase yielding the disaccharide and the corresponding hexapeptide and adamantylacetyl-pentapeptide, respectively.
