Adsorption Behavior Of Some Atmospheric Organic Compounds On The Mercury Electrode
A number of organic surface-active compounds have been detected in atmospheric samples. In spite of the interest for the interfacial properties of atmospheric droplets evidenced in literature already in the 1980s (Gill et al., 1983 ; Seidl and Hanel, 1983), measurements of surface tension in real samples are scarce and the relationship between the interfacial properties and the chemical composition of rain droplets is poorly understood (Facchini et al., 2000). In this work, we have investigated the surface-active behaviour of the organic compounds (single and mixed): levoglucosan (1, 6-anhydro-β -D-glukopyranose), 3-hydroxybutanoic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, azelaic acid, pinonic acid, and humic acid by using phase sensitive alternating current voltammetry. These compounds are suggested as model substances for the water-soluble organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols and droplets (Fuzzi at al., 2001, Tuckermann and Cammenga, 2004) which may be important in various atmospheric processes because of their surface-active properties. Effects of surface active substances in real atmospheric precipitation samples were compared with selected model substances.
