A robust meshless formulation for numerical analysis of shell-like structural components

A robust and numerically efficient meshless algorithm based on the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Method (MLPG) for solving elasto-static problems will be presented. In MLPG the domain is discretized by the set of nodes that do not need to be connected into any kind of mesh either for interpolation or integration purposes, thereby representing a truly meshless method. The governing equations are enforced over the local subdomains defined around each node by selecting the appropriate test function. Trial and test functions can be chosen from various function spaces. Special care will be given to solving elasto-static problems involving thin-walled structures. Thereby, the kinematic of a three-dimensional solid is applied, allowing the use of complete 3D constitutive equations instead of the conventional Kirchhoff or Reisner-Mindlin type kinematic assumptions. Moving least squares (MLS) approximation functions combined with the polynomial functions are employed for construction of nodal shape functions. In contrast to the most available meshless formulations where shell geometry is described approximately, the geometry of the shells is described exactly by using the curvilinear coordinates. Procedures for alleviation of locking effects will be presented and the efficiency of proposed formulations will be demonstrated by numerical examples.
