Detection of enterotoxins, hemolysin and fimbrial adhesins in Escherichia coli strains isolated from pigs with colibacillosis

Colibacillosis is an infectious disease caused by enterotoxigenic strains of Escherichia coli (ETEC). In pathogenesis of intestinal colibacillosis pathogenic strains play the key role colonizing the intestines and producing enterotoxins that stimulate electrolyte and water secretion from the intestinal mucosa. The strains isolated in pigs produce three forms of enterotoxins: heat-labile (LT) and two types of heat-stable (STIa and STII). LT enterotoxin is structurally, immunogenic and functionally very similar to enterotoxin produced by Vibrio cholerae (choleragen or CT). LT and ST enterotoxins in the gastrointestinal tract cause loss of water, sodium, chloride and bicarbonate from the cells. The latest available tests are aimed at identification of LT and ST enterotoxins of the ETEC strains isolated in humans. Due to immunogenic and functional similarity os STI (human) and STIa (porcine), and of CT and LT enterotoxins, these tests can be applied in diagnostics of porcine ETEC strains. Our studies were aimed to assess the suitability of commercial laboratory tests in detection of ETEC strains isolated in piglets and their introduction into routine laboratory diagnostics.
