Platelet serotonin and serum cholesterol concentrations in male schizophrenic patients with and without family anamnesis of suicidal behavior
Suicide is the most common cause of death in schizophrenia. There is a 10% lifetime risk. Preventing suicide is one of the main targets of psychiatric care. The neurobiology of suicide is still unclear. Various studies have aimed to identify possible peripheral markers that may be helpful in the early detection of suicidal behavior. Among the most recent hypotheses, low blood cholesterol level has been extensively explored. Suicidality has also been related to a decreased central serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) function. Platelet 5-HT might be used as one of the indicator of the central serotonergic synaptosomes. The aim of the study is to evaluate platelet 5-HT and serum cholesterol concentrations in male schizophrenic patients with family anamnesis of suicidal behavior (in the first- or second-degree relatives), and in the male schizophrenic patients without family anamnesis of suicidal behavior. Both schizophrenic groups are male in-patients hospitalized at the Department of Psychiatry in Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb, matched for age, body mass index, frequency of other psychiatric diagnoses and socio-demographic parameters. Our results have shown the lower platelet 5-HT and serum cholesterol concentrations in male schizophrenic patients with family anamnesis of suicidal behavior than in patients without family anamnesis of suicidal behavior. The investigation of biological correlates of suicidal behavior is important to assess high-risk subjects and to develop strategies of prophylaxis.
