Analysis of the population heterogeneity in Macedonian and Macedonian Romani (Gypsy) using 15 microsatellite markers
Numerous studies demonstrated that autosomal STRs have become the choice of loci for determination of parentage testing and in forensic analysis. Allele frequencies of 15 AmpFlSTR Identifiler STR loci (D8S1179, D21S11, D7S820, CSF1PO, D3S1358, TH01, D13S317, D16S539, D2S1338, D19S433, vWA, TPOX, D18S51, D5S818, and FGA) were analyzed in a sample of 100 unrelated autochthonous Macedonian and 102 Macedonian Romani individuals, representing different ethnic groups inhabitating the same country of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The agreement with HWE was confirmed by exact test and χ 2-test. Forensic parameters (power of discrimination (PD), power of exclusion (PE), polymorphic information content (PIC), probability of match (PM), paternity index (PI)) and heterozygosity for the 15 studied STR loci were calculated. The interpopulation comparison between Macedonians and Macedonian Romani revealed significant differences. Comparisons of Macedonians and Macedonian Romani with neighbouring Balkan populations: Kosovo Albanians, Serbians from Vojvodina province and Montenegrians from Montenegro were also made. Reported data point to Macedonian Romani as an example of an endogamous population of Asian (Indian) origin that shows significant allelic differences when compared to neighbouring Southeaster European populations.
