SEASONAL VARIATIONS OF PAH MASS CONCENTRATIONS IN ZAGREB AIR

This paper presents an analysis of PAH mass concentrations measured in PM10 particle fraction (PM10 particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 &micro ; m) collected at one measuring site in Zagreb air, and of seasonal differences in PAH mass concentrations in PM10 samples collected over five years. The average mass concentrations of all measured PAHs were different from year to year. The average value for BaP was 1.37 ng/m3 in 2001, 1.24 ng/m3 in 2002 and 1.79 ng/m3 in 2003, 1.17 ng/m3 in 2004 and 1.28 ng/m3 in 2005. The average mass concentrations over the five years were below the limit value (2 ng/m3) set by the Ordinance on Recommended and Limit Air Quality Values in Croatia. The average mass concentrations of all measured PAHs were lower in the spring and summer, while they were higher in autumn and winter. The highest average concentration of BaP was 0.58 ng/m3 in the spring of 2003 and the lowest was 0.23 ng/m3 in the spring of 2005. Average summer mass concentrations of BaP varied from 0.07 ng/m3 in 2001 to 0.13 ng/m3 in 2004, and in the autumn of 2002 and 2005 they were about 2.10 ng/m3. In 2001, 2003 and 2004 average autumn mass concentrations of BaP were about 2.75 ng/m3. In winter months, average mass concentrations of BaP ranged from the highest 3.45 ng/m3 in 2002 to the lowest 2.35 ng/m3 in 2004.
