The relation of gender, family background and theory of mind in Croatian adolescents

Research into individual differences in theory of mind (ToM) ability has shown several effects of the child’ s social environment, as well as the influence of gender, on ToM performance. However, the findings have not been conclusive, and the majority of empirical investigations of gender and family influences on ToM have focused on infants and young children. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation of gender, family background and ToM in a sample of Croatian late adolescents. Participants were 265 nineteen year old university students (86 girls and 179 boys). To asses ToM ability in late adolescents we used a newly devised ToM test based on a multidimensional approach in examination of social-cognitive processes underlying ToM. The test comprised of two age-appropriate short stories depicting ambiguous everyday situations. Each story was followed by questions tapping four domains of social understanding, namely conceptual role taking, empathetic sensitivity, perception of a person as a psychological being with stable personality characteristics, and the ability to imagine multiple perspectives and alternatives. Along with completing the ToM test, participants also filled out a short questionnaire which included questions regarding their gender, age and family background. Measures of family background included questions about number of younger and older siblings participant has, mother’ s and father’ s education and socioeconomic status. Significant influence of gender on various aspects of ToM ability in late adolescence is found. Results are discussed in relation to earlier findings regarding gender and family influences on individual differences in ToM in children, adolescents and adults.
