Croatian ornithological nomenclature:the current state and perspectives
Croatian ornithological nomenclature has been affected by crisis for long time due to absence of integrated ornithological nomenclature. Two nomenclature are available to users and they can actively or passively decide for bother of them at their own discretion. This problem has existed since 1988. Besides, it persists as a result of a mistakenly understood idea of translating freely foreign scientific, i.e. standard names of bird species into Croatian, which additionally enhances the issue of non-existent unique ornithological nomenclature. I would like to encourage urgent compilation of the Croatian ornithological nomenclature by appointing an expert committee organized and supervised by a competent and authoritative institution. The committee should bring together linguists, literary scholars, ornithologists and zoologists. It would also be helpful to have assistance of experts familiar with regional dialects, in particular those who have the knowledge of etymological changes in bird names through the history of their communities. The most important is to establish a procedure for acceptance of a new ornithological nomenclature by production of a document that would be accepted and applied by all who use bird names. By neglecting such a necessary approach, each attempt at elaboration of a new nomenclature would only represent a new addition to the two already existing ones rather than solution the major problem of acceptance of scientific bird names.
