Appearance and eradication of Caulerpa taxifolia in the Barbat Channel
The first observation of the tropical alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the area of the Barbat Channel (44°4416N-16°5332E)(between Island Rab and Island Dolin, Adriatic Sea, Croatia), was in September of 1996. At the time, about 20 m2 of the surface was covered on 350 m2 of affected zone. The alga was located on sandy bottom between depths of 2.5 and 8 m. The colony was manually extracted from October 5 - 14. Approximately 130 hours diving time in total was needed for the process. Following eradication, there were a number of follow-up investigations of both the eradicated area, as well as the surrounding area (1 miles), and no algae was found. The last follow-up investigation of this region was in January 1998, done by our time, and no algae was found at this time.
