Effect of fifteen years of Tobacco production in Monoculture and Crop Rotation upon the Yield and Quality of Flue-cured Tobacco in Agriecological Conditions of Croatia
The experiment of tobacco production in monoculture and crop rotation was set up on the experimental field of Tobacco Institute Zagreb. Tobacco was planted in monoculture, two-crop (wheat, tobacco), three-crop (maize, wheat, tobacco), four-crop (maize, soybean, wheat, tobacco) and five-crop (maize, soybean, wheat, oil-seed rape, tobacco) rotation. Tobacco growing in monoculture reduced the yield from 2.63 t/ha in the year 1987 to 1.39 t/ha in the fifteenth year (2001). A significantly lower yield was obtained after the fourth year of tobacco monoculture compared to tobacco growing in crop rotation. Tobacco growing in crop rotation had a higher percent of better quality classes and a better chemical composition.
