Buckling analysis of curved beam considering curvature effects
This paper deals with the buckling problems of curved beams. The finite element method is presented. With the linearized incremental equilibrium equations, elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of the curved beam finite element are derived. Two nodes with 6 d.o.f. are placed at the each node of the finite element. The displacement components are approximated with exact functions and the effects of curvature are consistently considered. Analytical and numerical results are compared for the case of pinned curved beam subjected to a pair of bending moment. Having defined the equation of equilibrium of a buckled curved beam, potential energy due to radial stress is included in the derivation of virtual work equations. Elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of the curved beam finite element, with two nodes placed at the end of the element, are derived by using the linearized incremental equilibrium equations. The stability problem is solved as an eigenvalue problem.
